Pick up any newspaper, trade magazine or business publication and there will be horror stories of data and identity thefts. There have been many high-profile businesses that have suffered at the hands of computer hackers over the past several years. It's impossible to determine the monetary impact that these thefts have had on the lives of thousands of people.
Even more astounding is the fact that the data stolen was in the businesses' control at the time of the attack. What measure can be taken if the data storage equipment is not in the business's control, perhaps when it has been sent to a data recovery service for repair and retrieval?
This is why it is so important to plan ahead for data disasters, such as drive failure, and not leave it to last minute, panicked decisions. Research the various hard disk data recovery services now, before an emergency strikes. Here are some of the things to look for in security measures:
• The equipment to be recovered should be protected when not being repaired. This means it should not be kept in a back room on a shelf. Only trust your data with a company that uses a secured vault.
• The vault should be certified by a standards organization, such as the Underwriters Laboratory. They set standards that various types of equipment must meet to be certified.
• Look for a recovery company that takes your data security seriously. This type of company will go above and beyond the security measures employed by many institutions such as banks.
• The vault itself should be able to protect your data 24/7. This can be accomplished by timed lock mechanisms that only allow entry during working hours. This will help protect the drives, even if an employee has the combination, because off-hour access is impossible.
• The best vault systems are constructed of steel-encased concrete, often with a 14,000 PSI rating. Furthermore, these vaults should be able to withstand attacks from torches and tools of up to 60 minutes.
Additional security protocols and measure should include a door locking mechanism that requires two combinations and two employees to open. Security can be further enhanced by biometric technology, ensuring that only authorized personnel may open the vault.
Since the door is often the weakest link in a vault system, it should be constructed to withstand attack. The best doors are rated at 4000 pounds.
The vault must remain protected during working hours as well. Since the vault door will be open, secure day gates should be installed that limit access to the equipment to be recovered.
This all sound like a lot to ask of a data lab. However, your files need to be protected during hard disk data recovery. Anything less could spell disaster, or even destruction for your business.
